Most owners trying to grow reach for the same lever: more leads. But there is a prior question, and it is cheaper: how much of the demand you already paid for is leaking out of the bucket? Roughly one in four home-service calls never reaches a person. A caller who lands in voicemail almost never leaves a message — they call the next company, usually within about two minutes. Every one of those calls was bought with your ads, your truck lettering, and your reviews, and then dropped at the last inch. This week's episode is about the owners who fixed the leak first.

The Shift

Think of your phone two ways: as a net that catches everything that comes at it, or as a hole in the bucket you keep paying to refill. The companies winning with AI right now are not outspending anyone. They put a capture system under the phones — an instant response to every missed call, answering that covers overflow and after-hours, follow-up that persists — and then the marketing money they were already spending started working at full strength. Growth came from answering demand, not buying more of it.

The Law

Pennsylvania's Act 47 is in effect as of today, Sunday, October 18, 2026, and it is among the toughest outreach laws in the country. Marketing calls and texts are allowed only between 9 AM and 7 PM, Monday through Saturday — none on Sundays, including today, or legal holidays. A text counts exactly like a call, and so does a voicemail, including ringless voicemail. Automated and AI-voice marketing requires prior express written consent you can produce. Opting out is broader than STOP: QUIT, END, REVOKE, OPT OUT, CANCEL, and UNSUBSCRIBE all count and must be honored. Penalties run $1,000 per violation, $3,000 when the person reached is 60 or older. The wider lesson: states are writing their own rulebooks now, so any follow-up system has to know the customer's state, their consent, and their local time before it reaches out.

Who's Doing It

A Charlotte HVAC company thought it had a lead problem. An audit told a different story: 94 calls in, 54 answered by a person, 40 vanished — most never even logged. After the capture system went in, 41 missed calls were caught the next month and 26 became booked jobs in month one. By month three, revenue went from $62,000 to $94,000 a month — same ad spend, same team. Out of Dallas–Fort Worth, another HVAC company logged more than 1,300 calls in about three months, jobs booked on the overwhelming majority, tens of thousands of dollars in booked work, most of it with no human involved. Both owners say the same thing about why they trust it: they can see everything the system does, and a human steps in on the exceptions.

The Next Leak: The Knowledge in People's Heads

Missed calls are the leak you can count. There is a quieter one: everything your company knows lives in a few people's heads — the prices the owner carries, the procedures the go-to person remembers, the workarounds nobody wrote down. When that person is out, work slows down. When they leave, the knowledge walks out with them. That is why, alongside the phone systems, we now build the company's brain itself: a knowledge base interviewed out of your own people, organized into cabinets, and served back to every employee with the source cited — with permissions applied before it reads a single word, so pricing stays with the people cleared to see it. We call it Ask Odell, and it just went live at askodell.com. The same thinking drives the automated follow-up systems and custom CRMs we build: capture what the business knows and what its customers ask, and stop letting either leak away. More on both in the weeks ahead — these pages will follow what we are actually building.

Your Move

Three moves, in order. First, a 30-day call audit: calls in, answered by a person, never called back. That third number is usually the most expensive line in the business. Second, a compliance check before automated follow-up touches anyone: consent on file, every opt-out word honored, no Sunday or after-hours sends where the law forbids them. Third, fix the leak before buying leads: instant response, after-hours coverage, persistent follow-up. That is what we build at The Agency — and it starts with seeing your own numbers.
